When did the Los Angeles Chargers join the NFL?
The Chargers were originally formed in 1960 in Los Angeles, but only played one season there before moving to San Diego, where they played from 1961 until 2017 as the San Diego Chargers. From 1961 to 1970 the team was a part of the American Football League (AFL), but began playing in the National Football League (NFL) when the two leagues merged in 1970. The franchise relocated back to Los Angeles in 2017.
Where Do the Los Angeles Chargers Play?
The Los Angeles Chargers are the second professional football team in Los Angeles (along with the L.A. Rams) and after the move from San Diego in 2017 they have played their games at Dignity Health Sports Park, which was formerly known as the StubHub Center. However, they plan to be moving into the soon-to-be-built SoFi Stadium after it is completed in 2021. There, they will share the venue with the L.A. Rams in what will be a $5 billion entertainment complex located in Inglewood, only a few miles from the LAX airport.
What is the Capacity of the Stadium?
The Los Angeles Chargers are currently playing at Dignity Health Sports Park as a temporary measure before they move into the SoFi Stadium, slated to open in mid-2021. Dignity Health Sports Park has the smallest capacity of any NFL stadium by far, with the ability to hold only 26,000 fans, barely more than a third of most stadiums’ capacities. The new Sofi Stadium however, is designed to hold 70,240 attendees, and will have the ability to expand and accommodate up to 100,000 fans for Super Bowls, the Olympics, and other high-capacity events.
