    After moving from Quebec to Colorado, ownership wanted to re-brand the team and change the Nordique nickname. They couldn't use ‘Rockies’ which had been the nickname of the previous Colorado NHL team since the local MLB team had now been using it. Ownership’s first choice was to name the team the Extreme. However, due to a lot of backlash from the community, they decided to go with their second choice- Avalanche which was much more well received.

    There was not a better rivalry in sports than the Colorado Avalanche and the Detroit Red Wings in the mid 1990’s and early 2000’s due to many run ins in the Western Conference playoffs. Avalanche’s biggest division rival is the Minnesota Wild. Meeting on a number of occasions each season since the Wild entered the league in 2000, this rivalry is always a physical one and one that Avalanche fans look forward to every year.
