Why are they called the Tampa Bay Lightning?
If you want the short story, the Tampa Bay Lighting got their name because Tampa Bay is the lightning capital of Canada and U.S.A. If you want the long story, it’s because team founder and NHL legend Phil Esposito refused to accept the naming contest entries from Tampa Bay locals. The two front-running names were the “Tampa Bay Oceanics” and the “Tampa Bay Pelicans” were refused by founder, when in fact he only agreed with any fan that submitted “Lightning” because two weeks prior he was at his friend’s house and the friend’s 84 mother suggested to name the team the “Lightning,” and Phil said, “that’s it!”
